IPL’s Green Power Option recognized by National Renewable Energy Laboratory

June 9, 2016

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), has been recognized by the Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in its latest “Top 10” rankings of the country’s leading utility green power programs. IPL's Green Power Option allows participants to specify an amount equal to 100%, 50% or 25% of their monthly electricity use to be generated by environmentally friendly, renewable resources.

NREL’s rankings in the category of “Top Green Power Sales” include the IPL Green Power Option (9th) with 182,496 Megawatt-Hours (MWhs) in 2015. The sales achieved through the Green Power Option in 2015 are equivalent to the annual power usage of almost 16,700 average American homes.  It also represents the avoided CO2 emissions from over 26,000 passenger cars driven for one year. NREL is the U.S. Department of Energy's primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. NREL is operated for the Energy Department by The Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC.

When you enroll in the IPL Green Power Option you will pay a small premium in addition to IPL’s standard, regulated rate. This premium reflects IPL’s cost to purchase the renewable energy  from Indiana and Midwestern wind farms. In the past two years,  a typical residential customer using 1000 kilowatt-hours in a month and enrolled at the 100% level would have paid a premium of  less than $1.50, on average, on their IPL electric bill.

The Green Power Option is available to both residential and commercial/industrial IPL customers.  More information about the Green Power Option, including how to enroll, is available at IPLpower.com/GreenPower.  Larger commercial/industrial customers should call the  IPL Business Call Center at 317.261.8444 for additional information on the premium or to enroll in the program.
