IPL to hold ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new battery-based energy storage facility

July 7, 2016

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony for its Advancion® Energy Storage Array on July 12 at the Harding Street Generation Station. Select IPL and AES leaders will provide remarks. Facility tours will follow the ceremony, during which time guests and media will have the opportunity to view the battery storage system and connection to the grid.

The Advancion Array is the first grid-scale, battery-based energy storage system in the 15-state Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) region. The IPL facility uses lithium-ion batteries, the same technology as the batteries used in a laptop or cell phone, to connect to the grid. It can instantaneously match supply and demand of electricity, giving grid operators the ability to store excess electricity, and to balance  intermittent resources such as wind or solar energy.
