IPL, City celebrate sustainability efforts at Indy Free Tree

IPL announces Green Power Option pledge with Indy hotels

April 28, 2017

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.— Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), today announced six prominent downtown Indianapolis hotels that have pledged to participate in IPL Green Power Option, a program which allows participants to specify a percentage of their monthly electricity use  to be generated by wind, an environmentally friendly and renewable resource. The hotels announced today during the Indy Free Tree event include Crowne Plaza Indianapolis, Hyatt Regency Indianapolis, Omni Severin Hotel, The Westin Indianapolis, Marriott Indianapolis, and JW Marriott Indianapolis.

“This pledge shows that we are moving the needle on sustainability here in Indianapolis,” said Rafael Sanchez, IPL President and CEO. “IPL recognizes that our business customers want to adopt a more sustainable, efficient business model, and we are committed to providing cleaner energy, delivered more reliably and more affordable than ever before.”

Collectively, these six hotels will reduce approximately 20 million pounds of CO2 emissions annually, the equivalent to 1,530 residential homes’ emissions, by participating in the IPL Green Power Option program.

Due to the efforts of Visit Indy, the City and others, Indianapolis has appeared on national television, hosted major sporting events like Super Bowl XLVI and is home to some of the most prominent conventions in the United States, which all bring tourism and business to Indianapolis hotels. Offering greener energy choices is vital in boosting Indy’s tourism industry.

“Indy has established itself as one of the greenest tourism and convention destinations in America. From our walkable downtown, which minimizes the need for carbon-producing transportation, to our electric car sharing service and, now, our environmentally friendly energy-powered hotels, Indy is a great choice for travelers who believe in reducing their carbon footprint,” said Leonard Hoops, Visit Indy President and CEO.

Shortly before IPL’s annual Indy Free Tree event commenced, Sanchez and City of Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett addressed attendees with sustainability messages and recognized each hotel individually and as part of a forward-thinking group that is focused on reducing their collective carbon footprint. Each hotel also received a certificate and plaque from IPL.

Additionally, IPL was recently celebrated as a 2017 Utility Environmental Champion by Market Strategies International Cogent Reports’ study, Utility Trusted Brand & Customer EngagementTM: Residential.  Utility Environmental Champions were chosen based on survey responses from residential customers of 130 U.S. electric and natural gas companies.
