IPL Advancion® Energy Storage Array recognized on SEPA’s 2017 “Top 10” utilities lists

April 26, 2017

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind..—Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), has been named as one of a select group of utilities that connected the most solar or the most storage to the electric grid in 2016, earning a spot on the annual “Top 10” utility industry lists compiled by the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA).

In survey results released today, the IPL Advancion® Energy Storage Array (IPL Array) ranked fourth in SEPA’s “Storage Capacity” category, providing 20 megawatts (MW) of interconnected energy storage equivalent to 40 MW of flexible resources with unmatched operational flexibility. Additionally, IPL ranked fifth in SEPA’s “Storage Watts per Customer” category.

“IPL is honored to be recognized by SEPA for our efforts in developing energy solutions that balance affordability for our customers and the impact on the environment,” said Rafael Sanchez, IPL President and CEO. “The IPL Array provides an innovative approach to diversifying our resource mix, which enables us to meet the future needs of our customers.”

Awards are given in four categories: Top 10 utilities for most new solar megawatts and most new watts per customer, and Top 10 utilities for most new storage megawatts and most watts per customer, which are a new addition to the survey results this year. The Top 10 winners in all categories were recognized at the organization’s flagship conference, the SEPA Utility Conference, held in Tucson this year.

“One of the reasons we started the utility Solar Top 10 lists back in 2007 was to highlight key, but the often unrecognized role utilities were taking in putting new solar on the grid,” said SEPA President and CEO Julia Hamm. “At this pivotal moment in the U.S. energy transition, the industry leaders on this year’s Top 10 lists—such as IPL—will continue to be critical to the growth of solar, storage and other distributed energy resources on the grid.”

In 2016, the IPL Array was recognized by Edison Electric Institute for innovating execution of solar generation and battery storage projects. Additionally, there was representation from IPL and AES at the White House Summit, which invited regulators, energy company leaders and energy developers to discuss renewable energy and energy storage.
