AES Indiana will continue to not disconnect through the end of month

Indiana’s utility winter moratorium ends Friday, March 15

March 14, 2024

AES Indiana customers will not experience disconnection or incur late fees post the utility winter moratorium ending tomorrow, March 15. While AES Indiana continues improvements to its new customer system, our priority is to ensure customers are not negatively impacted.

Every year, the state’s winter moratorium runs from December 1 through March 15. During that time, Indiana law prevents utilities from disconnecting service if the customer receives or qualifies for financial assistance from the Energy Assistance Program (EAP). The winter moratorium is designed to help keep Hoosiers warm during the colder months while providing customized solutions so customers can pay their energy bills. Eligible customers should apply to the program at a local EAP intake office and provide their utility with written proof of assistance.

Although disconnection is suspended, all AES Indiana customers are encouraged to pay their bills in a timely manner by developing an online accountment payment plan or calling 317-261-8222.

Customers can stay on track with their utility bills by reviewing several programs to help eligible customers, including:

  • Energy Assistance Program is a government program that runs through May 20, 2024. Customers must meet the income guidelines to qualify.
  • Winter Assistance Fund runs through May 31, 2024 for Marion County residents, and customers must meet the income guidelines to qualify. The Winter Assistance Fund helps those who cannot afford their entire electric bill but do not qualify for the government's Energy Assistance Program.
  • Power of Change is AES Indiana's $150,000 emergency relief fund that is available thanks to donations from AES Indiana, corporate partners and customers. The program is designed to help income-qualified customers with a one-time grant to assist with electric bill payments. The program received a boost from a contribution of $50,000 from audiochuck, an Indianapolis-based media company known worldwide for its #1 true crime podcast, Crime Junkie.
