AES Indiana to sponsor 66-foot replica Eiffel Tower that will illuminate downtown with energy efficient LED lighting

AES Indiana partners with Indiana Sports Corp and USA Swimming to power activities in Indianapolis with renewable energy during the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming, presented by Lilly

AES Indiana, a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), has purchased renewable energy credits (RECs) and will apply them towards energy usage at Lucas Oil Stadium during the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming, presented by Lilly (“Swim Trials”). These RECs will offset more than an estimated 1.1-million-kilowatt hours of energy, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 100 average American homes.

“AES Indiana is proud to support the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials and this historic event by investing in cleaner energy through Renewable Energy Credits (RECs),” said Brandi Davis-Handy, President of AES Indiana and member of the Local Organizing Committee. “Extending cleaner energy solutions to the facilities hosting major events in Indianapolis is another way we are accelerating the future of energy together with our community and creating a path to a cleaner and greener future here in Indianapolis.”

For more than a century, AES Indiana has provided safe, reliable, and affordable energy to customers. The company is accelerating its transition to a greener energy future in Central Indiana by diversifying its portfolio comprised of natural gas, wind, solar, energy storage and two coal units which the utility has filed plans to repower to natural gas by 2026. AES Indiana is projected to be the first investor-owned utility in Indiana to be out of coal.

During the nine-day event, AES Indiana is proud to sponsor the Replica Eiffel Tower which will be located on Georgia St. in downtown Indianapolis. This 66-foot replica, constructed by the Latinas Welding Guild, welcomes all to the Circle City for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Swimming. Like the original in Paris, the replica is illuminated by energy-efficient LED lighting, and like the Swim Trials is powered by 100% renewable energy through renewable energy certificates (RECs). By prioritizing energy efficiency, both the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the replica Eiffel Tower in Indianapolis contribute to reducing their environmental footprint and promoting sustainability within their countries and communities.

“I want to thank the team at AES Indiana for their continued support of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials and Indiana Sports Corp,” said Patrick Talty, Indiana Sports Corp President. “Our goal for the Trials is to take them to the next level and AES Indiana is helping us do that in two ways. First, they are helping with our sustainability efforts by purchasing renewable energy credits for the Trials. Second, their sponsorship of the Replica Eiffel Tower will help create a must-see moment for our visitors that will be the centerpiece of our downtown activations. Thank you to AES Indiana for being such great community partners.”

“We are grateful to AES Indiana for their thoughtful involvement in what will be the world’s largest swim meet,” said Tim Hinchey III, President & CEO of USA Swimming. “We appreciate the enthusiasm they’ve shown to enhance the fan experience and further impact the sustainability of the event.”
