IPL earns EEI Emergency Response Award following winter storm

June 14, 2017

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.— Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), was presented yesterday Edison Electric Institute’s (EEI) “Emergency Assistance Award” for its work in assisting Consumers Energy and DTE Energy in Michigan following a severe winter storm in March earlier this year.

This award is presented twice per year to EEI member companies to recognize an outstanding response in assisting a neighboring or nearby electric company in power restoration efforts after service has been disrupted by severe weather conditions or other natural events. The winners were chosen by a panel of judges following an international nomination process, and the awards were presented during EEI’s Annual Convention in Boston.

“On behalf of everyone at IPL, we are honored to be recognized for EEI’s Emergency Assistance Award,” said Joe Bentley, AES US Vice President of Customer Operations. “We take great pride in serving our customers in Indianapolis and helping our neighboring electric companies in times of need.”

In early March, winter storms brought high winds, rain, and snow to southeast Michigan, causing countless service interruptions. IPL devoted nearly 2,000 hours over the course of eight days in order to restore service to customers in Michigan affected by the winter storm. IPL crews endured high winds, rain, and snow during their efforts to restore service to the 256,000 Consumers Energy customers and 600,000 DTE customers who were impacted.

“IPL crews quickly responded to the call to assist in the restoration efforts following March severe storms,” said EEI President Tom Kuhn. “Mutual assistance is a hallmark of the electric power industry and IPL crews exemplify the industry’s dedication to mutual assistance and customer service. The courageous and dedicated crews who faced challenging and hazardous conditions are greatly deserving of this recognition.”

In 2016, IPL was also awarded EEI’s Emergency Assistance Award for our assistance in restoring service to customers in Indiana following Winter Storm Petros.
