Our commitment
Over the decades, we have successfully kept our largest power plant running reliably, which is a testament to the hardworking generations of Pike County Hoosiers and the support of the entire community.
AES Indiana has big plans for Pike County. By transitioning generation from coal to natural gas and building renewables like solar and battery storage, we are making a clear, long-term investment in this region.
Petersburg Generating Station Repowering
New fuel: Unit 3 and Unit 4 will be converted from coal to natural gas (pending approval from the IURC).
On the way: Conversion will be completed by December 2026.
Petersburg Energy Center
Generation and storage: Installing 515,388 solar modules that will generate 250 MW of solar power and will store 180 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy.*
Timely: Operational by the end of 2025.
Connected: Building a 6.6-mile 345 kV transmission line to connect to the Petersburg Station, leveraging a retired coal unit.
*A 100 MW solar power plant can generate enough electricity to power approximately 60,000 homes.
Pike County Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)
Interconnection: Using rights from a retired coal unit that will help meet the energy demand during peak times.
Energy capacity: Can store and deliver up to 200 MW of electricity for four hours.
Coming soon: End of 2024 with construction underway.
Battery setup: Standalone battery project with all batteries in one location, connected to a substation.
